EAT WITH US: Poi, Laulau, ‘Uala and Poke.

  • Poi is the primary staple of Hawaiians. It is made from the corm of one of our most sacred plants, the taro.

  • Laulau is pork and fish bundled in taro leaves and cooked in an imu, a ground-oven.

  • ‘Uala is sweet potato.

  • Poke is sliced and seasoned raw fish

All are from time immemorial but are daily fare in Hawaii today. You may have a hard time obtaining the first two in your city, but sweet potato and poke (as in “Poke bowls”) are available in most cities.
